One problem with 3D TV (other than the current high price of the screen) is that you need to wear glasses to get the 3D effect. Glasses are expensive (over $50 a pair), and there is no standard yet for glasses which means the specs used on one suppliers screen wont work on a screen from another company in some cases. A demo of that can be seen here.

One way around this is to use a 3D TV that requires no glasses. The problem with this at the moment is the way it works. The glasses-less 3D screens require that you sit in a specific place to get the 3D effect. When you move your head the effect disappears. There are actually a few points in a room where people might sit to get the effect. Either way, it’s awkward having to sit still for so long and not a very friendly to watch the TV with friends.

Microsoft might have the answer though with some new technology it is working on that has the ability to direct the light in to viewers eyes wherever they are sitting in the room. The system uses LEDs along the bottom edge of the screen that can vary the angles at which the light is sent to the viewer. The screen is capable of delivering 3D content to two different viewers by tracking their eyes with a camera mounted on or near the screen. The LED’s then adjust to point the light in the right direction. Previous versions were bulky, but Microsoft [MSFT] have managed to shrink the system down a little.

Microsoft’s design, though, uses a lens that tapers from 11 millimeters thick at the top to six millimeters at the bottom. This taper means that the light can travel through the lens instead of thin air, Applied Sciences Group Director Steven Bathiche told Technology Review, meaning the entire setup can substantially shrink in size.

Light from the diodes enters the lens along the bottom and bounces through the lens until it reaches the proper viewing angle, at which point it escapes.

Right now the main hurdle is that a viewing angle of just 20 to 40 degrees can be used. However, it is expected that the viewing angle will be improved on over the next few years and that we could see a decent sized 3D TV without needing glasses in the near future.

SingTel has announced it is the first in the region to enable content providers and television broadcasters to deliver 3D TV content to consumers in Singapore and abroad via high-speed satellite and land-based platforms.

The Singaporean telco will play a vital role in developing a national 3D TV trial by providing the infrastructure and capabilities to allow local broadcasters, such as its own mio TV platform, to play out 3D content.

SingTel’s latest venture is made possible with its multi-million 3D-enabled broadcast playout facility which will allow content producers and broadcasters to address technical issues prior to the island wide commercial roll-out of 3D TV services.

SingTel will also offer a comprehensive suite of solutions to aid media companies in every stage of the production process for content in 3D, High Definition (HD) and Standard Definition (SD) formats.

Titus Yong, SingTel’s VP of satellite, said: “From playout services to content editing and post-production, SingTel has the full range of capabilities to make 3D TV a reality in Singapore and the region.”

He added: “We are proud to be catalysts for the development of high quality 3D TV content and services that will usher in an exciting new era for the broadcast and multimedia industry.”

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a global leader in display technology and digital media, announced today that it has become the first company to commence mass production of panels for 3D LED TVs and 3D LCD TVs.

“Recently, 3D displays have captured the industry spotlight,” said Wonkie Chang, president of the LCD Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung Electronics aims to lead the global 3D TV panel market in pioneering panel mass production for 3D LED and LCD TVs.”

The company began producing LED and LCD compatible panels for 40-inch, 46-inch and 55-inch full-HD 3D TVs using ‘3D Active Glasses’ this month, employing Samsung’s exclusive true 240Hz technology.

Samsung’s true 240Hz technology delivers full-HD viewing in 2D, and also smooth, natural, full-HD 3D images that can vividly capture rapid movements.

By incorporating true 240Hz technology, operating at 240 frames per second, Samsung’s panels deliver a more lifelike picture with alternating left and right eye images through the use of 3D Active Glasses technology.

Samsung has reduced the response time of its LCD and LED panels by 20 percent to less than four milliseconds, eliminating any interference between left and right eye images. With this improved response time, Samsung is able to achieve natural 3D images and also deliver 2D pictures capturing rapid movement with exceptional clarity.

Samsung’s new 3D Active Glasses technology first blocks the left and then right lens, causing a momentary lag when images are shown to each eye to achieve more lifelike 3D images. The term, ‘3D Active Glasses,’ was selected as an official term by the Glasses Standardization Working Group of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) earlier this year.

The polarized glass method previously used in 3D glasses produced separate images for the left and right eyes, resulting in half the resolution of two-dimensional pictures as only half of the screen can be viewed through each polarized filter. Brightness was also lowered because of the polarized filter.

According to a market research firm, DisplaySearch, the 3D display market is expected to grow from $902 million in 2008 to $22 billion in 2018. Specifically, the 3D TV market is expected to expand to a $17-billion market, with sales increasing from 200,000 units in 2009 to 64 million units 2018.

The concept of 3D television has dominated this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, with major manufacturers showing off televisions that can carry the techology that was once thought to be a rare movie theater treat. But what’s making real news are the content providers that are now pledging programming that will literally jump off your screen.

ESPN has announced it will broadcast sporting events in 3D starting with this year’s World Cup in June. Discovery Communications also announced they will launch a 3D channel in 2011 in a joint venture with Imax and Sony. Panasonic and DirecTV are teaming up to create three 3D satellite channels by June. Samsung, Dreamworks and Technicolor announced an alliance for the “delivery of a complere 3D home entertainment solution” in 2010.

But will it catch on like HD TV’s eventually did? Or will the 3D revolution be squashed by expensive and ungainly equipment — and just plain weirdness?

Nick Bilton of The New York Times thinks the cost will doom the 3D movement. “Imagine having to pay another two or three thousand dollars to replace the crystal-clear high-definition flat-panel television you just bought for Christmas (for a third of the price). Then imagine having to watch any of those aforementioned shows or movies while wearing a pair of $50 3-D glasses. Then having to buy another five or more pairs of $50 3-D glasses for family members or friends to watch with you.” Bilton also wonders what will happen if “I want to watch shows like ‘Seinfeld,’ or ‘Everyone Loves Raymond’? Will I really want to experience these in 3-D too?”

Phil Rosenthal of the Chicago Tribune also fixates on the overall cost of the operation, breaking down what the technology means for both the consumer and enormous media companies. “The hope is that when awe-struck by the lifelike illusion of images coming off the screen, we won’t notice the very real cash leaving us — or better still, we won’t mind,” he writes. But he speculates that “because we lack the bucks for the new high-tech TVs that will be needed to enjoy the full effect, this development is one that doesn’t yet look as though it’s headed straight at most of us.”

Nick Summers of Newsweek says the technology is real and viable — if only to keep the cable companies alive in an age when so many people watch TV and movies online. “But sports, delivered live and in large-format HD—that’s something the Internet is not yet capable of,” he writes. “Making the visuals more awesome, to use a highly technical term, is the only way to compete with what video delivered over the Internet offers in choice, convenience, portability, and cost. I would love, love, love to ditch my cable payment. But I would also love to see Alex Ovechkin tearing down the ice in three dimensions.”

David Colker of The Los Angeles Times notes that “one of the major barriers for 3-D TV has been a lack of content.” But with providers lining up and teaming up to create that content, “it would bring a steady supply of 3-D to its customers,” making the technology an exciting reality.

William Friese-Greene first filed the patent for the three-dimensional process in 1894. No, that’s not a typo; 3D film has been around for over 100 years. He developed a system that used a stereoscope to combine two images into one. The basic process remains the same to this very day, and in recent discussion about the future of the moving image, 3D has dominated the landscape.

The question seems to be whether 3D is the next step in film and video, or if it just another gimmick to get more technology off the shelves and into our homes. To paraphrase: “Didn’t I just buy an HD TV?”

The answer can be found by simply looking at trends.

In the last few years, 3D movies have seen a resurgence, especially in children’s fare. 2004’s The Polar Express was one of the first, followed by films like Monster House and Meet the Robinsons. In 2007, Beowulf bucked the kid stuff, billing itself as one of the first serious 3D films aimed at an adult audience.

2009, however, takes the cake in the recent 3D saturation with a total of twelve mainstream Hollywood films jutted out at audiences last year. Even more are in the works for 2010, including Toy Story 3D and the Burton-Depp love fest of Alice in Wonderland. And if the recent box office receipts of a certain James Cameron movie are any indication, the trend may be here to stay.

Avatar is a film that, despite its shortcomings, has captured the lens-covered eyes of the world. Cameron has created a giant blue environment to which people cannot wait to escape. And, partially due to the giant marketing blitz that accompanied its release, everyone wants a piece of it.

The buzz around this movie seems to imply that cinema has reached its next level, and Avatar is the film that brought it there. While the film’s impact on modern cinema is certainly noteworthy (the movie now stands to surpass Titanic as the highest grossing of all time), the question of its lasting effect on image technology will remain unanswered for quite some time.

The world of mass entertainment has always been bombarded with new and improved ways of seeing. When the standard 4:3 ratio television became a staple in the early 1950s, movies switched over to widescreen format. The mantra of film executives was to “show em’ what they can’t see at home.” This led to another brief trend in the 1950s: 3D cinema.

Then came video in the ‘70s, which revolutionized the way images were captured and brought into our homes. More and more people were glued to the television, and movies went to stranger lengths to pull them out of their living room recliners. Earthquake (1974) introduced a gizmo called Sensurround: a large series of speakers that used low frequency waves to “shake” the audience. Some people reported nosebleeds.

The late seventies and early eighties provided a brief glimmer of hope for studio executives when films such as Jaws, ET, and the Star Wars trilogy created the idea of the modern blockbuster: adventure films with broad themes that pleased everybody and had convenient merchandise tie-ins. This blockbuster ideology continued up until very recently, when suddenly, everybody seemed to be staying at home.

Enter YouTube and the Internet. The laptop became the new form of entertainment for the all-too-important teen demographic, and illegal downloading put a hole in Hollywood’s pocket. On the television front, high definition, 50-inch plasma, and digital cable were the new standards. This brings us to 2007, the year Beowulf hit theatres in 3D Digital IMAX form.

The public is part of a giant game of technological poker, and the antes are going up at exponential rates. In a move that seems timely with the release of Avatar, electronics companies at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2010 showed up to the conference floor with dozens of prototypes for 3D television, from the cinema to your rec room.

3DTV is not completely new, of course. It’s hard to forget the ‘90s sitcoms with the gimmicky 3D episodes. The idea this time around is constant 3D: sports, news, and drama, all with an added dimension. The technology works the same way as films like Avatar: polarized glasses that allow a different image into each eye.

This in-home 3D sounds like a great deal until one learns the cost. Just to upgrade the TV and receiver box would cost upwards of $4000. That doesn’t factor in the cost of the glasses (how big is your family?), or the massive infrastructure overhaul needed to transmit the huge amount of data. Can you say tax dollars?

As if that weren’t enough, movie producers are already moving ahead, figuring out ways to watch a movie in 3D without glasses. Television will not be far behind, and computer technology is sure to be joining in pursuit for our eyes and ears. Holograms won’t be far away.

Technologies come and go, and yet every time something new hits the shelves, the general public seems to have amnesia, forgetting that they already own products with this same “cutting-edge” technology.

However new Avatar seems now, its use of 3-D technology may seem old in just a few years.

The past six weeks have been extremely beneficial for the developing 3D home format, with the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and the release of Avatar helping propel the technology into headlines. Research firm In-Stat expects more than 40 million 3DTVs will be shipped in 2014. Analysts also believe 3D Blu-ray players will closely trail 3DTV units shipped in the following years, which will dramatically boost Blu-ray sales. Avatar, which has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, has shown average consumers the power of the format. Prior to the release of Avatar, 40% of consumers

A study compiled by NPD last June indicated just 17% of consumers wanted 3D at home, with the format receiving a boost in support from the 3D film “Up.” Just one in five consumers actually wanted 3DTV and overall consumer awareness of the format was unknown. There are still several issues that must be dealt with before consumers feel comfortable with the 3D in the home. Price and 3D glasses are two of the leading consumer-driven concerns, as the cost of 3DTVs will initially be high.

The cost of 3D glasses — or the elimination of them altogether — must become more reasonable in 2010 or 2011, or consumers will wait for the format to develop further. Designer 3D glasses are being made already, but the custom glasses are designed only for consumers with deeper pockets. Avatar’s success has also resulted negative headlines, however, including the revelation that a man in Taiwan died after reportedly becoming over-excited while watching the film. The man, only identified as Kuo, suffered from hypertension — watching the film triggered his medical condition — and he lost consciousness before heading to the hospital. Nevertheless, 3DTV is poised to become a popular feature in HDTV’s and Blu-ray players released this year and beyond.
